What’s it like to be a student-athlete in the US?
Being a student-athlete is amazing. I feel that I have greater responsibility to perform well both in the class and on the field. People look up to individuals who are able to do more than average persons and I can’t see myself falling below this standard. Also there are lots of little perks that come with being a student-athlete. Traveling to Miami, getting priority in classes and most important, a great feeling of self-pride.
Has your stay in the US met your expectations so far?
My stay here has definitely met my expectations and even surpassed them. I have great new set of friends and met so many influential people. If I am being totally honest when I was back in England I was so engulfed in football that it was pounding the enjoyment out of me. Coming out here gave me chance to take a breath and assess what I wanted to do. I have gained more passion and respect for the game by doing this. It has also shown evident in my performance on the field as I feel I have developed as a player.
How has your team performed this season?
We have a great team out here and a great set of players. Last season we became Conference champions for the first time in the school’s history and narrowly missed out on going to Nationals. We are only getting better and I feel that I have made a great decision to come here. There are so many opportunities out here to be seen and you never know where your future can take you.
Have you improved as a soccer player?
I definitely feel that I have developed as a player being out here. I would have to say I am most happy with my fitness and confidence. As the weather is really hot out here it took a few weeks to adjust to the heat and humidity. However when I got my fitness up I felt fitter than I had ever been before. In regards of my confidence, I must say it has had the biggest effect on my performance. I feel more confident on the pitch and ultimately it has helped me to play so much better.
